Transferring contacts to Windows phone

There are different ways to import contacts onto your new Windows Phone, depending on where they're currently stored.

My contacts are on my old phone
If your contacts are on another phone, they might be stored on a removable SIM card in the phone or on the phone itself. To learn what your options are, including how to import contacts from a SIM card, see Importing contacts from your old phone.

My contacts are in the cloud
If your contacts are stored in the cloud as part of an online service such as Outlook.com, Google or Microsoft Office 365, just set up that account on your phone and your contacts will be imported automatically. To learn how, see Setting up or deleting an email account. You can also sync contacts from your social networking accounts – Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn – to your phone.
If your contacts are part of an online service that isn't fully compatible with Windows Phone, another option is to set up a Microsoft account. You can transfer your contacts, emails and even your calendars to that account, then set up the account on your phone. For more information, see Using your Microsoft account to sync contacts to the cloud.

My contacts are in Outlook on my PC
If you use Microsoft Office Outlook with Microsoft Exchange (typically the case if you use Outlook at work), setting up contact synchronisation is straightforward. To learn how, see Setting up or deleting an email account.
If you use Outlook without Exchange (typically the case if you use Outlook at home), you can add your Microsoft account to Outlook, then transfer your contacts from Outlook to the Microsoft account. Then, when you add the Microsoft account to your phone, your contacts will show up there. To learn how, see Synchronising contacts and calendars from Outlook on your PC to your phone.

It can use maps and Bing search to find nearby restaurants, places of interest. It can search your phone and web as well ( Universal search hinted again ).

•Cortana is really smart and it can not only handle your orders smartly but also surprise you with some Jibes and offer smarter suggestions. Some of the examples extracted from the SDK query.

•Cortana will not work when power saving kicks in.

•You can turn off Cortana and will stop receiving the reminders, alerts and ideas.

•Cortana is tightly integrated to Bing Account and the profile data saved with Bing Account remains synced across devices. Even if one deletes the data on phone the cloud profile data remains intact.

•Cortana’s language can be changed. Extracted Icon pack shows its various icons for different functions.

•Cortana saves the things she learns about you in the cloud as well as on your local device.
You would be able to rename Cortana (and this was confirmed by Microsoft in an interview about virtual assistant) .

•Cortana will handle your calls and texts and will silence other notifications during those “Quiet hours”. You can turn it on or set it to turn on automatically.

Denim update

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1
•Cortana – The most personal digital assistant on the market will now be available in the UK and China as a Beta. India, Canada and Australia will have access to Cortana as a public Alpha. For US residents, Cortana now includes an improved natural language, car kit integration via Bluetooth for contacts, snooze reminders and calendar improvements.
•Live folders – If you prefer to keep your apps or games organised, you can now put them into folders. Simply press, hold and drag an app over another to create a new folder on the Start screen. Each folder can be renamed by tapping on the text field above the open folder.
•Apps Corner – Create a customised Start screen, where only specific apps or games are accessible. This could be particularly useful in the workplace if you’re issuing Windows Phones to employees.
•SMS merge and forwarding – Select individual text messages to either delete them out of a messaging thread, or to copy and past them into a new message in order to forward them.
•Snooze Times – It’s now possible to customise the snooze time within the Alarm app.
•Consumer VPN – Maintain privacy and security when using data while connected to public Wi-Fi hotspots or even with your home Wi-Fi.
•Mobile Web Site improvements in IE – Connect and browse even faster with improved downloading speeds on mobile websites.
•Store Live Tile (US only) – The Store Live Tile displays featured apps and games that are the most popular in the Store, or most relevant for you.
•Lumia Camera – Replacing Nokia Camera, Lumia Camera is faster and more intuitive than before to make the best camera experience, even better.
•Speed – Pocket to capture speeds are superfast, and it only takes milliseconds going from shot to shot.
•Moment Capture – A long press of the camera button starts 4K-quality* video recording at 24 FPS. With each frame at 8.3 megapixels, you can save individual frames as high quality still images.
•Rich Capture – Auto HDR and Dynamic Flash are now welcomed into the already-impressive feature set. Shoot first and adjust the camera settings later for that perfect photo.
•Improved image processing algorithms – Updated to give you clearer photos, even in lowlight.
•“Hey Cortana” Voice Activation** – Gone are the days of pressing the microphone button to wake-up Cortana. Simply say “Hey Cortana” while the phone is idle and Cortana will activate. This is possible thanks to the SensorCore technology.
•Glance Screen – Compatible Lumia devices can now show more at a glance with Bing Weather, or Bing Health & Fitness data, in addition to time and date, notifications and application data.
